Franchise cost guide · from real FDD filings

How much does a franchise cost?

The real number isn't the franchise fee — it's the total initial investment in FDD Item 7. Here's what goes into it, what it runs by category, and how to check any specific brand.

What goes into the cost

Franchise fee

A one-time, up-front fee paid to the franchisor for the license — disclosed in FDD Item 5. Typically $20K–$50K, and it's only one line of the total.

Total initial investment

The all-in range to open, disclosed in FDD Item 7: build-out, equipment, signage, inventory, licenses, and the fee. This is the number that matters.

Working capital

Cash to cover the first months before the unit is self-sustaining. Item 7 includes an estimate — under-budgeting it is the most common first-year mistake.

Ongoing royalties & ad fund

Recurring percentages of gross sales (Items 6–8), not part of the up-front cost but central to whether the economics work over time.

Franchise cost FAQ

How much does it cost to open a franchise?

Total initial investment ranges from under $50,000 for home-based service brands to over $2 million for restaurant or hotel concepts. FDD Item 7 discloses the estimated low-to-high range for each brand, including the franchise fee, build-out, equipment, and working capital.

Is the franchise fee the same as the total cost?

No. The franchise fee (FDD Item 5) is a single up-front line, usually $20,000–$50,000. The total initial investment (FDD Item 7) is the all-in cost to open and is typically several times the franchise fee.

What ongoing costs do franchisees pay?

Beyond the initial investment, franchisees typically pay an ongoing royalty (a percentage of gross sales) and an advertising or brand-fund contribution, both disclosed in FDD Items 6 and 8. These are recurring, not one-time.

Where do these cost figures come from?

Every figure is drawn from the brand's Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) — the legal filing franchisors must provide. FranchiseVerdict extracts Item 5, 6, and 7 data; per-category figures are medians so a single high-cost outlier can't distort the typical cost.

Cost figures are from FDD Item 5–7 filings and are informational, not investment advice.
